CV

임영주는 영상, 회화, 설치, 출판 등 다양한 방식으로 미신과 같은 초현실적 혹은 인간의 믿음과 결탁된 종교적 경험을 언어,미디어, 자연 과학의 여러 징후들과 연결시킨 작업을 해왔다. 종교와 미신과 같은 정신적인 영역을 역설적이게도 과학적 사고 방식과 대비 시킴으로써 작가는 이 둘 간의 차이보다는 유사성에 주목한다. 따라서 그의 작업에는 초자연적 요소와 이를 자의적으로해석, 전유, 차용, 은유하는 (유사) 과학적 이미지 혹은 방법론이 동시에 등장한다.

 

Youngzoo IM  has been tracking and connecting stories, interested in how science and religion arbitrarily interpret natural phenomena and the beliefs that emerge from the process of communicating them to the public. IM works primarily with video, along with painting, installation, and book publishing, to examine absurd beliefs and their underlying structures. By paradoxically juxtaposing spiritual realms such as religion and superstition with scientific ways of thinking, she draws attention to the similarities rather than the differences between the two. Beginning with a single image or sound, her research weaves tradition, history, politics, science, and nuance into the story. Thus, her work contains supernatural elements and (pseudo) scientific images or methods that are arbitrarily interpreted, appropriated, borrowed, and metaphorized.
